Your Yucky Places

Have you ever noticed that we all carry a label; whether it’s a self-diagnosis medical revelation or just the opinion of a friend. Personally, several of my friends have concluded that I have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and some even say I have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.) Yes, my busyness and excitement level often leaves friends tired and worn out. As for me, I feel I am more OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Truly, I do like certain things to be “just right” in my life, but not to an obsessive level … just in a way that I like!

Too many items on the bathroom or kitchen counter, dresser, coffee table, or end tables simply sends me over the edge. Anything that is placed for decorative purposes is allowed. In regards to meals, I utilize a Pac-man pattern. When eating a meal, I may enjoy a bite of salad, then a nibble of meat, a bite of potato, and enjoy my roll last. Then, I repeat the eating pattern again. Strange, I know! Other people often eat one type of food at a time; all the salad first, then the meat, potatoes, and then the whole roll. When cleaning, the same behavior is true. Often, I start with the bathroom, then dust the entire house, vacuum, mop, and end up in the laundry room to complete the house cleaning process with washing and folding clothes. Others clean a room at a time.

We all have behaviors that are exceptional to us as individuals. Can you relate? Admittedly, over the years, I feel that I have “matured” in this area of my life. No longer do I make a big deal over things that once would have sent me over the edge. Flexibility is now a friend … patterns are preferred, but I can handle changes without feeling like my life is out of sorts.

However, there are areas of my life that are just down-right disgusting! It seems as through our family lives out of my car. We don’t live in town … we actually live out in the country. Needless to say, we spend a lot of time on the road and my ride takes a bit of abuse. At any given time you can find clothes, dishes, football gear, and even empty Sonic cups … you name it and it’s in our car!

My bedroom closet is the same way. When we built our house, one of my personal requests was a large, walk-in closet. Looking back, I thought a large closet would help me keep things tidy and organized. Sadly, that is not the reality of my closet these days! Why is it I can organize every area of my life except these two? Both my car and my closet are ridiculous! YIKES!

For several months now, I have “clean out car” and “organize closet” on my “To Do” list. Somehow, I manage to skip over these two tasks day after day. Honestly, the ugliness of these two area just doesn’t seem to bother me. Furthermore, there is some freedom in the fact that I can be messy if I want to … it’s mine, right?

I am a clean freak but also oddly find comfort when a small area of my life is messy. There is a freedom in not caring.
